Thanks Hypertrophic Literary for publishing my poem “Offering”. I went to a workshop with poet Kenneth Steven in Mungrisedale, Cumbria, a few years back and this poem was born there. I was living in Madrid at the time, but visiting my family for the summer in northern England. I’d been starting to write a bit, but hadn’t been to any kind of writing class for quite a while and I loved it. He led a fantastic workshop, full of insight and honesty. Kenneth asked us to think about childhood and it was a drizzly day outside. Some people went wandering off into the nearby woods and paths to get inspiration, but I stayed put in the classroom. In retrospect that seems an unusual choice for me to make, but I think maybe I didn’t like the feel of us all being out there together, trying to get inspired! I guess it felt a little forced. Anyway, it was the right choice as it forced me to sit and write something and I wrote the first version of this. This set of three poems published by Hypertrophic was my very first poetry publication in print.
